| NOTE: JustLooking 3.2 has been released. You should really be using that version instead. It’s much cooler! |
I’m pleased to announce the immediate availablity of JustLooking 3.1. JustLooking is a program to view pictures and images on your Mac OS X (Tiger) based computer. JustLooking is a Universal Binary, and can be run on both PowerPC and Intel Macs. The program is and will always be very free.
Please note that I pay for my own bandwidth, so please try to use the BitTorrent version of the download if you are able to—it’s about a 3.1MB file and takes about 60 seconds.
- Download JustLooking-3.1.dmg now (BitTorrent – TPB).
- Download JustLooking-3.1.dmg now (HTTP – San Diego, CA)
JustLooking 3.1 contains a number of bug fixes and minor improvements on the 3.0 release.
- The toolbar no longer takes keyboard focus.
- SPACE Advances images in the regular viewer.
- Cmd+I toggles Image Info visibility.
- You can copy images from the context menu of images.
- - and +/= keys can be used to control zoom levels.
- Cmd+Backspace now deletes images.
- New Korean and Catalan translations.
JustLooking 3.0 pretty much contains more new features and code than all the previous versions of JustLooking combined! New features include:
- New transition effects in full screen mode.
- A thumbnails / preview window with thumbnails of all windows in the same directory.
- Image resizing support.
- Recent Images file menu.
- A new look and feel for the toolbar.
- Toolbar buttons can be made small or large.

- (optional) Disable Screen Saver in Full Screen Slide Mode.
- Hide Cursor in full screen slide show.
- (optional) When returning from slide show, viewer window moves to same image.
- DEL key deletes images.
- Arrow keys now work in full screen mode.
- Delete confirmation is optional now (preferences).
- There is a new Image Info Window.
- (optional) Automatically open first file in last folder visited.
- (optional) program can go directly to full screen slide show.
- A new context menu has been added.
- Background colour can be changed.
- Set as Desktop Background option.
- File Associations preference has been fixed.
- Lots of bug fixes.
Note that image saving has been expanded to allow you to save files in any of 5 supported formats (more coming). I currently do not preserve meta-data (EXIF, PNG info, etc), nor do I support animated GIFs, but will support this in the next version hopefully. You can now also scale and save images, which will be quite convenient.
JustLooking 3.0 includes the following language translations:
- French
- Italian
- Swedish
- Chinese (Simplified)
- Portuguese
- Spanish
- Dutch
- Slovenian (new!)
- Polish (new!)
- Korean (new!)
- Catalàn (new!)
Due to the large number of changes in 3.0, the following translations have not been included, and will hopefully be added to a language update in a few weeks as I get help from users:
- Russian
- German
- Norwegian
- Finnish
- Chinese (Traditional)
Thanks to all the people who help out with translations. Shipping this program in multiple languages is extremely cool! (I actually have a Hungarian version in the works too. Super cool!)
As always, I’d love to hear your comments and feedback on 3.0, and hopefully there won’t be many problems that need fixing!! I have been using 3.0 for a few weeks here by myself without much trouble, so I hope this good luck continues!
New for Version 2.5:
- Core Image, OpenGL, and Quartz drawing for faster image processing and transitions.
- Deleting the last image in a directory caused an exception an error message bug fixed.
- Rotating zoomed images not updating scroll bars bug fixed.
- Dutch/Flemish version added (thanks to Olaf de Vries).
- Added some people to the credits whom I had forgotten. Apologies Emmanuel and Mathias!
New for Version 2.0.2:
- The arrow key navigation problem that some, but not all, users have been seeing has been fixed.
- Support for the following languages has been added:
- Portuguese (Brasilian)
- Chinese (Traditional, Taiwan)
New for Version 2.0.1:
- The following localisations have been added or updated:
- Norwegian
- Swedish
- Simplified Chinese
- Italian (updated)
- German (updated)
- French (updated)
- I have been working on adding accessibilty features to JustLooking, but the docs on this are kinda monstrous, and it’s taking some time to work through.
- There are no major bug fixes in the 2.0.1 release. I am investigating a couple of common problems relating to arrow keys on certain older macs, and will post a fix for that as soon as possible.
New for Version 2.0:
- Based on the suggestions and feedback from some users, I have completely redesigned and rewritten the user interface for JustLooking, implementing the smoked-black look that a lot of applications are moving towards in Leopard.
- Image resizing has been made significantly faster and less memory intensive. Image rendering is also much quicker.
- There is now remote control support in slide show mode:
- next/prev image
- pause/restart
- exit
- increase/decrease show time by 2 sec
- Basic saving of rotated images for PNG, GIF (non-animated only), JPEG, TIFF, and BMP file formats.
- GIF file support has been completely fixed and is now properly working for all animated and transparent images.
- Hold down “option” key on startup causes app to go to full screen slide show.
- I have fixed a number of bugs in the program.
Introduction
Welcome to JustLooking, an image viewing program for Mac OS X. JustLooking is designed to be used instead of the “Preview” application on your computer for browsing images. In particular, it has the following differences:
- It focuses on files and directories instead of lists of files. Thus, once you load a file, you can easily navigate through all other files in the same directory.
- It displays images at their native resolution instead of interpreting DPI information stored in the image meta-data. While images are printed at the maximum resolution possible, on screen they are displayed pixel-by-pixel.
- Being designed more for viewing of Images, it properly shows animated GIF files.
- The entire program can easily be manipulated and powered by simple keystrokes for a quick and pleasant viewing experience.
- JustLooking also supports such basic features as printing and rotating and will hopefully prove to be sufficiently functional for most users’ needs.
It should be noted that the application cannot completely replace Preview, as there are a number of features in the latter that JustLooking simply does not have, such as selecting and copying regions, saving images in various formats, and viewing of Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files.
Requirements and Installation
Running JustLooking is quite simple, and the only requirements are:
- Mac OS X 10.4 or greater
- 256MB RAM
- 4MB free disk space
JustLooking is installed on any new machine by simply dragging it into the Applications folder.
Credits
JustLooking was designed, written, and partially localised (French, Italian, German, Spanish, and some Chinese) by Marc Wandschneider here in Beijing over a couple of casual months. I sat down to write it as a replacement for Preview, as I found the latter to rarely operate in a way that I wanted it to. I tend to keep directories full of images, whether they be traveling, family, or junk I collect from the Intarwebs.
Finder and Preview rarely let me select and view more than a couple hundred of images at a time, and I have large numbers of folders with more files than that.
The following people have helped with Localisation of JustLooking:
- German – Stefanie Schau
- French – Laurent Molina
- Italian – Roberto Bellina
- Spanish – Carola Clavo
- Russian – Sergey Melnik
- Finnish – Markus Peltomäki
- Norwegian – Geir Werner Hagen
- French – Emmanuel Lemor
- Swedish – Henrik Östlund
- Swedish – Mathias Sjöström
- Chinese (Simplified) – Zhang Tongzhu
- Chinese (Simplified) – Emma Liu
- Italian – Marco Frasca
- German – Marc’s dad.
- Chinese (Traditional) – Nitoc Taiwan
- Portuguese (Brasilian) – Helvécio Mafra
- Dutch / Flemish – Olaf de Vries
- Slovenian – Miha Rekar
- Polish – Tymon Kokoszka
- Chinese (Simplified) – Jack Zhong
- Catalàn – Iván Ponce Gómez
- Korean – Kim Hanjo
Help us Out
Speak a language that isn’t in the list of currently localised languages? See some mistakes in the current translation for a particular language? If you’d like to help or offer corrections, I’d love the help. The more languages, the better!!
Coming Up
I’m thinking of adding the following features in future versions.
- Support for saving more image file formats.
- Resizing and saving of images.
- Batch resizes and renames (the holy grail of free image programs).
- Support for more resizing algorithms.
I’d love to hear if users have any suggestions. Feel free to contact me with any features you’d like to see!
One bug from 3.0 is still there though:
"For most images I open in JustLooking, there is a 1-pixel-wide black line along one of the edges of the image.
Here's what it looks like:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v32/dhtns/misc/justlooking_line_bug.png
The image is a 96x96 image that is completely white, but as you can see, there is a black line along the top edge of the image (which evidently shouldn't be there).
Usually, it's at the top, but for some images, it's on the left.
You would not see it if the background color is black."
The line very apparent if you've set the background color to a relatively light color.
But anyways... good job! (as always ;p )
I'm also glad to see that the multiple Slide Show bug has been completely fixed now.
However, this issue still remains:
The ONLY way to stop a slide show is to press the Escape key. (or to quit JL, of course)
And strangely enough, File > Close doesn't work, yet Command W does. o_O
Here are some suggestions:
-to make File > Close work
-to have Start Slide Show become Stop Slide Show when there is an active slide show
-a context menu, with "Stop Slide Show"
Also,
I notice that for certain pictures, the picture at Actual Size is a bit blurry, which I'm guessing indicates that there is a slight zoom on it?
If I'm not mistaken, this is also due to the "black line" bug in my post above. The black line on the top and/or left makes the picture slightly zoomed out.
Thanks for your time!
One thing I'd love to be able to do though is have a menu option or a preference to present the slide show on the second monitor when one is connected. It seems to me that there is no easy way in either Preview, the Finder slideshow feature or anything other than Aperture, to present a bunch of photos on a second monitor (e.g. my TV).
Thanks in advance!
That's a good idea. What if I added an option like Cmd+SHIFT+F, which put up a dialog asking you which monitor you wanted to use. Would that be helpful? Or is it better as a preference?

When you need, example photo for test:

Please, check and correct this great trouble in you great software. :)
that is probably due to the '1-pixel black line' issue I've posted further up there.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v32/dhtns/misc/justlooking_line_bug.png
The image is a 96x96 image that is completely white, but as you can see, there is a black line along the top edge of the image (which evidently shouldn't be there).
(And sometimes, it's on the left, and sometimes both at the top and on the left.)
I think that due to that 1 pixel on the top and/or left, the picture is slightly zoomed out, which is why it's blurry.
"remain" is correct that the blurring and the 1-pixel black line are related. It has to do with integer coordinates (your monitor only has 1, 2, 3, or 1900 pixels) and floating point measurements (CoreImage wants to put the image at pixel 650.34). This creates a slight blur and black where there is extra space.
I am fighting with CoreImage to fix this problem: I originally just did crop off any decimal points and shift anything down to the nearest integer number, but then there was a visible shift after the fade transition between images ....
This is my top priority to fix soon, so I'll hopefully come up with a good solution. I'm asking CoreImage to do a LOT right now and will try to come up with some way to coerce it into being more helpful :-).
marc.
It does not seem to be based on creation date, exif data or filename.
Am I doing something wrong?
Other than that it is so much better than preview - thankyou!
I have a small wish: I often want to open several images at the same time. Could you, pretty please, allow justlooking to open several windows instead of always using the main window? (I'd be satisfied if justlooking itself spawns a new session, if that better fits your programming model.)
Thanks for this otherwise wonderful applet!
Thomas
marc.
i'd like to suggest a "random order" mode when viewing a slideshow. right now it's always in alphabetical order.
extra snazzy would be an option to use random order except when pictures have sequential names (prefix+number).
The first is for the feature of opening a second instance of the program if someone opens another image while one is currently being viewed.
The second is the option to view thumbnails within the main image window.
I also would like to see a fullscreen mode that isn't the slideshow.
Other than these (very!) minor things, I was VERY pleased to find this app!
Thanks a bazillion for this awesome piece of software!
I discovered your app today and I am very pleased with what I saw. It is the first image viewing app I try that is usable and light.
I did notice, however, that the files are shown in alphabetical order and not in alphanumeric order like in the Finder. Thus the files are shown like this :
File1
File100
File13
File2
Instead of :
File1
File2
File13
File100
Like the Finder does. Could you correct this ?
I would also have a request : could you add a "move to..." command to the contextual menu ? (one that remembers the last folder used...).
But once more : this is the best image viewer I have seen in a long time !
thanks for JustLooking. I was looking for a simple tool to browse some 1000 photos without hassle and there was your program - great!.
If you still need it I could take care of the german localization. Just drop the file to: ori@quantentunnel.de and allow 3 days for delivery..;)
Since you asekd for Suggestions:
What I am doing is some sort of preselection of a lot of pictures: watch a picture, then delete it if blurred/underexposed etc. and go to the next.
So I really would love to have a "Delete" Button in the Toolbar.
(A customizable Toolbar would be best here - but thats a lot to ask for I think..)
Thanks and Rgds
Dan
Have you a solution?
Would it be possible to make the thumbnail window part of the interface itself in stead of a separate window ? and then the ability to scroll through the images with the scrollwheel ?
Thankx for this wonderful program :)
Preferably one that the user can choose to place either:
-on the side (so it would scroll up/down)
or
-at the bottom (so it would scroll left/right)
You might ask, well, why not just leave it as a window? That way, you can move it anywhere you want.
While that's true, having 2 windows in practice often is impractical. For instance, you want to make the main window larger to see a large picture, but then you have to move the thumbnail window out of the way. Or perhaps you want to see a window from another app side by side with JustLooking, but instead of moving just one JustLooking window, you wind up moving one, then the 2nd.
That's why I think the most practical choice for this purpose would be a sidebar/sidepane.
I noticed recently that portrait shaped photos (taller than they are wide) seem get rotated onto their side when viewing in JL. So in thumbnail view I you can see the files right side up, so it is definitely something related to the image orientation in the viewer. I don't recall this happening when I first started using JL about a month ago, so maybe it is something on my end and I should just reinstall it. I'll try that, but wanted to report the potential bug.
Thank you for providing this awesome, clean and simple program. I cannot stress enough how much a relief it is to finally have a nice image viewer on my Mac!
I forgot to add another critical issue I am having with rotating images in JL. When I rotate an image, move onto the next image, and then move back to the rotated one, I see that the rotated image's color has been slightly changed. I'm thinking maybe JL is saving the rotated image in a different color profile than the one that my images originally are, or something to that degree (I'm not too savvy with this stuff, but hopefully you can tell me what it's doing, what can be done differently on my end to prevent this. Currently I won't rotate anything because of this. Thanks!
Tom
1. I'd really like to have a sidebar with just the filenames. Others have asked for a sidebar with thumbnails. You could probably use the same layout and all for a sidebar with either filenames or thumbnails. But it's VERY important to me that I have an option to have ONLY the filenames, not thumbnails. I don't want to see thumbnails anywhere, ever. I HATE thumbnails.
To give an idea why I think thumbnails are so bad, consider one of my main uses of an image viewer. I have a business selling items online. I have thousands of images of items with various styles, dimensions, sizes, etc. They are in large directories, often with hundreds of images, sometimes thousands. Thumbnails are completely useless for getting around these directories. Moreover, thumbnail files take up space on the hard drive and tend to greatly slow down the loading of directories and increase memory usage.
I have used file viewers on many platforms over the years, including various versions of Windows, OS/2, BeOS, Linux, etc. On all these platforms, there were always popular image viewers that had filenames in a sidebar. Some even had a third pane where you could add text annotations -- something I consider quite worthwhile. (On Mac, those annotations could be stored as forks or spotlight comments or whatever they are called. Or they could be stored in separate, editable text files directory by directory.) Alongside these popular image viewers there are usually dozens and dozens of more obscure ones that suffer from defects such as:
1. No filename pane
2. A filename pane, but very, very slow loading of large directories
3. Excessive emphasis on useless features, like thumbnails and transition effects that slow the program down and add nothing in functionality
4. A corresponding neglect of essential features, like the ability to load an image in an external image editor, navigation controls, ability to move, copy, and delete files, etc.
I have been surprised to find no fully featured image viewer on Mac so far, though JustLooking seems very promising. Perhaps a future version of JustLooking will be the first fully featured image viewer on Mac.
I do not really understand the concept of an image viewer that shows only images in succession, without a filename pane. I feel lost without knowing whether I am at the beginning, middle, or end of a series of images, if I don't know what the filename is, if I can't see the file size, etc.
2. Have a global option to turn off all thumbnails. Personally, I HATE thumbnails. I don't want them anywhere in any program I use, and I find it EXTREMELY offensive when a program creates thumbnails without asking first and without even telling me where they are being stored.
I suggest that all thumbnail related functionality in the program be placed within a separate library that is only loaded on demand. That way, people like me who want no possibility of thumbnail features ever being used can erase that library from our hard drives.
When I see the anti aliased image like a pixel art, i must resize (only 1 px) the program window because the images result blurred (antialiased). You can try with one "pixelated" illustration if you resize a window.
I think that is a problem of Mac default read, but I will be happy if you help me or implement your software for debug this little but annoying problem.
Thank you so much!
first of all a big thank you for this great program. It has immediately replaced Xee as my default picture browsing application. But there are two things I really miss:
- Default opening in Original Size view (removing scrollbars so you can easily pan around with your mouse/touchpad) and
- The possibility to alter the zoom level in Fullscreen / Slideshow mode
I guess these two things could be really useful and would add towards the great usability of your program.
Anyway, thanks again!
-Andy
Also, if I choose "close file" from the menue, the program ends.
Nevertheless, great program! I looked for such a program quite a while since I was used to irfanview on PC.
I would like to just drag in a folder and have it read all files within that
folder and Additionally Read the files of other folders within that folder.
Right now it only reads files in the top folder...
Although it is a little slow...I love the feel...
I wouldn't mind waiting if it somehow pre-loaded the folders into memory
so that you could scan through faster...
One more....
Change key commands...I'd like to just press delete instead of Apple-D
Thank you!!
oh...last one...(just thought about it)
When Zoomed 100%...let's say it is a huge picture in quality...
like 6000 pixels...it would be nice to just Drag the picture around
so you could view in sections in detail instead of moving the Bar.
Cheers!!
I've been searching the net high and low for an OSX version equivalent of an ACDSEE like program (their only version blows for mac); some apps come real close but lack required features - especially the scroll wheel/flip through images function and the capability to automatically see all photos contained in the folder. Your app is SO CLOSE to being the perfect image viewing program in my opinion.
A few requests to add to your existing and future add-ons:
1. batch rotate
2. double clicking the image goes into browser mode for the folder or expands thumbnail window drawer and also can see any subfolders
3. drop n drag feature - in and out of Just Looking and into other apps such as Photoshop for editing
4. maybe a bit faster image processing / less memory hogging
5. customizable tool bar
Thanks!!
Unfortunately, it's too slow and not responsive enough for quickly skimming through a directory of images. Loading the next picture takes too much time compared to other equivalent tools (am on a 1 year old iMac).
The memory usage is also quite high.
Xee, sometimes mentioned here, has its shortcomings, but at least it gets this right.
Keep improving JustLooking, I've been following it or a while, and it's certainly going into the right direction.
Greetings
L.
thanks,

There should be more like this, it's not that hard. Thanks!
I posted a comment a month or two back about a serious problem I am running into when rotating images. I see the comment was never added among the recent praise entries.
Anyway, the problem I am having is that rotating an image actually changes the colors of my pictures slightly, and then permanently saves those changes when I save the rotation. Actually, the change doesn't show until the save is made. Because of this, I simply can't afford to use the rotate feature at all.
I know nothing about the programming end of this issue...whether it's saving images in a different color profile than from my camera, OSX profile, etc., but I think of an uninvited permanent change to a picture is an important issue. I hope you get this comment this time around and consider tackling the issue.
Many thanks!
In the "Preferences" menu is a dropdown called: "Default Image Scaling". It contains the options: "fit to window" and "stretch to window".
Since I mostly work with screen designs, I would love to have the option "100%" so I can see what a screen designs feel like even if I have to scroll.
Thanks again for your great work!
I had trouble moving images from my glyph hard drive to iphoto, and while viewing images justlooking would freeze. I would forcequit but the program would remain open, so I would have to restart to actually shut it down.
I now have a "volume" issue on my hard drive and have to do a reinstall. I am not sure about the relationship between your program and my problem, but they seemed to start around the same time.
Again a great program and I hope it is not related to my computer's problem as I want to be able to continue using it.
Thanks.
JustLooking looks like THE app. I'm looking for... BUT... my Mac runs OS 10.3 ! :o((
So, is it possible to download an older version for older Mac Os ?
Thank you very much for your answer.
And for JustLooking !
Best regards
